Not Sure if You or Your Child Needs a Vaccination? There’s an App for That

As a parent, keeping up with your children’s vaccinations can be a challenge. With some vaccines requiring multiple doses in sequences, others requiring booster shots over time, and others still needing to be administered on an annual basis, making sure your family’s immunizations are up-to-date is not nearly as easy as it sounds.

But many organizations and health authorities are trying to make it easier. Today, there are numerous smartphone apps available to help you keep track of your children’s vaccinations. The Immunization Action Coalition (IAC), which works in cooperation with the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has published a list of these apps on its website, though it should be noted that the list does not necessarily reflect endorsement by the CDC.

5 Vaccination Apps for Parents

Here are five of the apps – from reputable resources – that are available through the IAC website. This list is provided for informational purposes, and does not reflect endorsement by the Law Offices of Leah V. Durant, PLLC:

1. American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) App

The ACOG App offers several resources for mothers and women’s health care physicians. With regard to vaccinations, the app includes a list of best practices that can be used to both help keep track of vaccination requirements and understand the proper methods and procedures for administering childhood vaccinations.

2. CDC App

The general CDC App provides a wealth of information for parents, both vaccine and non-vaccine-related. Through the app, parents can find health news updates, statistical reports and other information that can be used to help make informed decisions about children’s vaccination and health care needs.

3. CDC Vaccination Schedules

As its name suggests, the CDC Vaccination Schedules app provides easy access to the vaccination schedules recommended by the CDC and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). It includes the recommended schedules for both children and adults, and includes color-coding, dosing information, automatic updates, and other features designed to make it easier for parents to understand their family vaccination needs.

4. Shots Immunizations

Developed by the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, the Shots Immunizations app is designed for health care professionals, but can serve as a useful resource for parents as well. “What vaccines would you recommend for a 10-month-old who has had only one dose of each of the basic vaccines and at what times would you have him return in order to catch-up? How about his cousin who babysits? She’s a 19-year-old college freshman with asthma who thinks she might be pregnant.” The app is designed to answer these questions and more.

5. CDC TravWell

If you will be traveling with your family, the CDC TravWell app can help you figure out what vaccinations you need before you go. It offers “a customizable healthy travel packing list” and other tools as well.
